1. Know the Habitats Before You Explore
Chitwan is a jungle covering 952.63 square kilometers (367.81 sq mi) and with a buffer zone of 729.37 square kilometers. It is made up of diverse landscapes such as riverines forests, tall elephant grasslands, and the dense sal forests with lakes and water bodies. Each eco-system supports different species. Getting to know the habitats will help you to understand where to look for specific species of animals.
- Sal forests often hide tigers and leopards.

2. Choose the Right Time for Safari
Wildlife sightings in Chitwan are highly influenced by weather, temperature, and time of day.
- Best season: October to May
- Best timing: Early morning and late afternoon, when animals are most active
- Cooler months: Ideal for spotting tigers sunning or patrolling territories
- Dry season: Grasslands thin out, making rhinos easier to spot
3. Track the Jungle Signals
The jungle has its own language and if you stop to listen, it can tell you a lot about where to look and where to go. The jungle speaks, and our guide helps you to understand its language. Learn to understand what you are looking for:
- Alarm Calls: Spotted deer and langur monkeys often alarm their fellow species of a predator lurking nearby.
- Fresh Pugmarks: Look for fresh footprints, especially in the soft riverine sand where it creates a detailed footprint. Expert naturalists can even estimate how long back the footprints were made by its owner.
- Scratch Marks: Look for scratch marks created by claws or horns on the trunk of trees.
- Bird Calls: Just like mammals, birds can also signal a lurking predator’s movement.
- Disturbed Grass Patches: These are a tell-tale sign that a rhino or a wild elephant have recently rested on that patch of grass.
